Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Coaching

Q: Why Do People Need a Coach?

A: No matter where you are in life, there’s always a desire for more—more success, more financial freedom, closer relationships, a deeper feeling of meaning in life, inner peace, etc. We all struggle with how to get what we’re looking for . Most people in North America believe that “hard work and doing it on your own” result in finding the life, success, or happiness that they seek. They believe that a price must be paid to attain what they want, and often that price results in poor health, not having enough time to enjoy life, strained or unhappy relationships or lessened productivity. Often, this effort may result in more of something, but not what you had in mind and you end up even further away from your intentions, dreams and passions. Many athletes, performers and artists know about this trap. They know that they need someone else, a trained someone else, to help them focus on their needs, and work effectively to realize their dreams. So they have a coach.

Some people have a coach—whether personal, executive or corporate, to:

  • be inspired to define or rediscover their destiny, passion, or dream.
  • focus on or achieve the next level of success or fulfillment in life, career or business.
  • create more in life — serenity, fulfillment, sense of purpose, balance, simplicity, joy, productivity.

Q: How Can Working With a Coach Benefit Me?

A: Can you think of an Olympic athlete that won the gold medal that hasn’t had a coach? What has Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Madonna, Picasso, Bill Gates, Andrew Carnegie, Abraham Lincoln, Shakespeare, Mozart and Martin Luther King and the many captains of industry have in common? They all understood the immeasurable value of what inspiration comes from someone who works directly with you—someone who challenges you to be your best, point out your blind spots, someone to keep challenging you to move beyond your personal limitations. Performers, actors, dancers, singers, almost always use a coach to help them realize their potential. Many of the top business executives have coaches or mentors with whom they can have honest, no-holds barred discussions.

Q: Why Should People Who Are Doing Well In Life, Career Or Business Need A Coach?

A: They might not. But they need to find out. Do they spend their time doing what they want most? Is their life balanced? Are their actions in alignment with their values?

Q: How Will You Know If Coaching Is A Worthwhile Investment?

A: The truth is that you won’t until you try it for at least three months. By the end of that time, it will be clear to you that coaching is worthwhile or not. You wouldn’t give any learning experience or course less of a try. The other way to look at it is to ask yourself, “what might it cost me or my business to not have a coach?"

Q: How is Coaching Conducted?

A: Clients are coached for a minimum three month minimum, for three half-hour sessions, usually over the telephone, or in person if the client wishes.

Q: How Long Do People Work With A Coach?

A: You need a minimum of three months to move through obstacles and gain clarity. After that, clients can continue for a varied period as long as they are achieving the results they desire. A typical period is a six months to a year.

Q: Who Hires Coaches?

A: People seeking career or life changes, entrepreneurs, professionals, or people in transition, managers, CEO’s, parents wanting to improve their parenting skills, corporations committed to employee satisfaction, artists, consultants, athletes — the full spectrum of individuals looking for the change to bring out the best in their lives. Some people come to coaching for more - more satisfaction, more money, more heart and soul, or more organization. Some come to coaching for less — less stress, less procrastination, less drifting. From all walks of life, people come to coaching to realize their full potential and make their dreams come true. Often people come to coaching who are in the midst of transition or crisis. Each of us at some point in our lives, forced by circumstances, re-examine our choices, our actions, our possibilities. Coaching offers clarity, honesty, compassion, non-judgment and inspiration.

Q: Is Coaching Done Face-to-Face??

A: Because most coaching is done over the telephone, most clients enjoy the confidentiality, convenience and privacy of this arrangement. However, if the client wishes, face-to-face coaching can be arranged.

Q: How Quickly Can A Client Achieve Results?

A: Coaching is not magic, but a committed and motivated client can make a significant change in a relatively short time. The scope of the changes you desire and how much time and effort you’re willing to put into it will determine how quickly you achieve results.

Q: Who Is In Charge Of The Coaching Alliance?

A: The client is. The coach doesn’t’ tell the client what to do, but rather provides the support, structure, feedback and inspiration for the client to make better decisions.

Q: What Exactly Happens In Coaching?

A: The first few sessions are spent in discovery. The coach explores with the client his/her values, dreams, passions, challenges and obstacles. During these sessions the coach and client design the coaching alliance. After the initial discovery sessions, the coach will continue to deepen the client’s learning and understanding while moving the client into action.

Q: Why Does Coaching Work So Well?

A: By hiring a coach you invest in yourself and make positive changes in your life in a more inspired manner. Thoughts and feelings become actions and actions become big changes. Having a partner whose total job is to support you makes life easier and more exciting. A coach can help you develop and refine your skills. You confront the obstacles and gremlins that are holding you back. You focus on the dreams and passions rather than the small things in life.

Q: How is Coaching Different Than Psychotherapy or Management Consulting?

A: Therapy for the most part delves into the psychology of the past and how a person got to be where they are today. Management consultants deliver “solutions” to problems that are predetermined based on their expertise. Coaching, in contrast, believes the client focuses on where the client is now and where the client wants to go. Solutions are created by the client. And unlike a “pop psych” program and “how to” courses, coaching is an interactive process forged by the alliance of the client and the coach.

Q: Is A Coach Like A Friend Or Spouse?

A: While a friend or spouse and others close to us can be very helpful in giving us their perspective, a coach is trained to provide a detached but totally supportive and honest perspective and hold the client accountable.
